It’s only the 1/2 mile stretch of Broadway between Canal Street and City Hall that has a double-deck subway. And the only reason why that lower deck exists is because originally the local tracks were to end in Manhattan at City Hall, while the express tracks were to continue to Brooklyn via the Montague Street Tunnel. But during construction, they decided to reroute the express tracks via the Manhattan Bridge, and that the local tracks would continue to Brooklyn via the tunnel. Today the lower level is used by out of service W trains.
Now two streets in Manhattan that do have a double-deck subway for a substantial length are Lexington Avenue and Central Park West. Texto de Jaime Rosado.
