A Toalete (La Toilette) - Eugène Antoine Durenne

Coleção privada

OST - 55x46 - 1915

Durenne initially dreamed of becoming a sailor, but followed his parents’ advice and studied law in Paris. In 1882, a new dream took hold, one he would never relinquish: in a letter to his family, he declared his love of art. He then attended the Académie Julian, where he met Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, whose work influenced his emerging style. He subsequently studied at the Académie Colarossi, where he formed friendships with Albert André, Louis Valtat and Georges d’Espagnat. Finally, it was in Georges-Daniel de Monfreid’s studio that he met Camille Pissarro and, through him, Paul Durand-Ruel. His friendship with Pissarro and the Impressionist masterpieces he discovered at Durand-Ruel opened his eyes to new possibilities in his own painting.

The artist then specialised in landscapes of the French countryside, interiors and still lifes, all imbued with his unmistakable melancholy and rendered in a subtle, finely modulated palette that places him among the Post-Impressionists. Durenne took part in the eighth exhibition of Impressionist and Symbolist painters at the Galerie Le Barc de Boutteville in 1894, but it was Durand-Ruel who opened the world to him with an exhibition in New York in 1900. He subsequently showed his work at numerous Salons d’Automne, as well as at Manchester City Art Gallery in 1907 and the Grafton Galleries in London in 1921. Texto da Christie's.
