O Sol (Le Soleil) - Federico Zandomeneghi

Coleção privada

OST - 41x32

Federico Zandomeneghi occupies a unique place within the Impressionist group, as well as among the constellation of artists supported by Paul Durand-Ruel. Of Venetian origin, he was initially nourished—and ultimately, to some extent, constrained—by the richness and academic tradition of the Italian painting of his native region, which notably gave rise to Titian and his celebrated Venus, of which Édouard Manet’s Olympia is a distant descendant. In search of greater artistic freedom, the artist left his homeland in 1874 to settle in Paris, a particularly fortuitous year, as it coincided with the first Impressionist exhibition, which he attended and which had a profound influence on him. His encounter with the visionary Paul Durand-Ruel, who believed in him despite his difficult beginnings on the Parisian art market, would prove decisive. The dealer notably organized solo exhibitions of his work in 1893, 1897, and 1903, contributing greatly to bringing his work to public attention and establishing his place within the Parisian art scene. Through his support, Durand-Ruel did more than advocate for the artist before the public: he also enabled him to pursue an individual artistic path, beyond the overly rigid categories to which art history has sometimes tended to assign him.

Through Zandomeneghi, another history of Impressionism thus emerges: one less centered on the movement’s canonical figures and more attentive to those artists who, while contributing to its renewal, forged distinctive bodies of work at the crossroads of tradition and modernity.
